We can all think whatever we want about Phil Spector, but the chances are that whatever we’re thinking has already been said. And know that people around him knew that he was nuts many, many years ago.
What we can’t take away from him is his production of what many people consider one of, if not the, finest pop holiday albums ever made, A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector. Among the Christmas chestnuts he roasted on the coals of his production fire are the classic “Sleigh Ride,” which he gave to the Ronettes, while he spread most of the other tunes around to the Crystals, Darlene Love and Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans (do you know much about them? I sure don’t).
To think, many people thought the great crooner Johnny Mathis had already staked his claim to the greatest version of “Sleigh Ride” a few years earlier. Maybe he had and still has it, depending on your taste and age; but, for now, let’s hear Ronnie Spector (pictured above at her 2013 Greatest Christmas Ever concert at the Rams Head Center Stage in Hanover, Md.) and the Ronettes >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6rDA2Czz0E
And for you fellow Mathis fans, know that bonus tracks are easy to come by here at Smith On Music. Here’s Johnny singing live from The Ed Sullivan Show >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCDJ1ETJjgA
